RP
II

RP II is the next chapter in Alfonso Cervera's ongoing exploration of memory, rhythm, and the embodied realities of his family's experience with visual impairment. Rooted in the intersection of Mexican Ballet Folklórico and contemporary dance, the work develops choreographic scores that emerge from shifting sensory experiences and alternative ways of perceiving the world. Rather than treating impairment as a limitation, RP II investigates it as a source of movement, composition, and imagination.
This project is generously supported by the Greater Columbus Arts Council, whose funding has made this ongoing research and creative development possible.

Retinitis pigmentosa
Retinitis pigmentosa is a rare, inherited degenerative eye disease that causes severe vision impairment, often beginning in early childhood. Cervera's solo dance places his family at the forefront as he archives and revisits shared moments with Maria Casanova and Denise Cervera's lived experiences. Through movement-based explorations, Cervera attempts to acknowledge past events and bring awareness to his family's disability.

máaxo'ob chan

Rooted in Ballet Folklórico and informed by contemporary improvisational practices, this site-specific work uses folklórico as an impetus for embodied exploration and choreographic discovery. Dancers activate the landscape through movement scores, cultural iconography, and collective imagination, creating a living dialogue between tradition, memory, and place. The work invites audiences to encounter folklórico as an evolving practice—one capable of generating new futures while remaining deeply connected to its cultural roots.

In-Ti-Mate is a collaborative multi-media dance duet performed by Alfonso Cervera and Hyoin Jun who explore what and how "intimacy" can be developed, shared, and experienced. Using a series of improvisational structures exploring touch and trust, the dancers revel in these concepts as a means to unravel expectations of identity by sensing and experiencing the labor of creating an occasion for each other and audience.
